Why should I take vocal lessons?

​There are a number of reasons why you might, as a worship leader, decide to take vocal lessons. If you are thinking about taking lessons but not sure if it is worth the investment of your time and money, here are 16 benefits of singing lessons. In no particular order lessons....

1. Build your confidence. Believe it or not, lacking confidence in your vocal ability can affect how you lead worship. Constantly worrying about how you sound means you are not concentrating on ministering and leading the congregation in worship.  
2. Show you how to find and sustain pitch.  Regular lessons help you tune your voice and build up a good critical ear improving your ability to hear and hit notes correctly. Pitchy notes can also be distracting for the listener.
3. Strengthens your voice. If your voice is weak or hoarse (tired) regular lessons with an experienced teacher can help you  strengthen your voice box to produce great sounding confident singing. 
4. Improve your tone.  You will  be able to craft out and develop your own unique and instantly recognisable sound. Think Donnie McClurkin, Whitney Houston, Isreal Houghton, Tonex or Clarke Sisters. They all have a unique tone( sound) which is instantly recognisable.
5. Teach you how to project and express making  singing (and preaching) much much easier.  Learn how to add depth and expression to your vocals making it easier to express God's heart when singing. 
6. Improves your breath management. You will be able to sing for longer before you need to take a breath.   Good breath management also helps with asthma and physical recovery.
7. Increase your singing range.  Improving your range will allow you to sing in higher keys, giving you more versatility and increasing song choices.
8. Teach you how to take care of your voice.  Good vocal health and habits will strengthen your voice and allow you to sing longer and stronger. 


9. Show you how to sing songs that you have always wanted to sing but never could before.  - Lessons will help you become a more versatile singer allowing you to sing different genres from gospel to pop, Hip Hop to Rock.
10. Help you to learn how to sing with understanding.   The Bible gives us many hints on how to prepare for ministry. To Timothy, Paul said: "..Study to show thy self approved..", in 1 Corinthians  we are encouraged to "...sing with understanding.." and in 1 Chronicles 15v22,  Kenaniah was chief singer because,"..he was skillful at it..' Knowledge is vital to the development of your voice, singing and to the growth of your worship ministry.
11. Show you how to find and sing in harmonies. This helps you to sings as part of a team.  
12. Help you understand the rudiments of music. Improve your general musicianship! Understanding basic theory helps when preparing music, rearranging the key of a song and communicating with musicians.
13. Teach you how to control your voice pt 1. Control your voice to sing longer runs and riffs. Or learn how to belt without straining and coughing.
14. ​Teach you how to control your voice pt2 . Find your chest and head mix to stop shouting and straining, giving easier access to higher notes in your range. 
15. Show you how  to use a Microphone. There are different ways to hold a microphone. Lessons help you understand how to use a microphone to enhance your tone and project.
16. Understand the importance of an effective warm-up routine. An effective warm up routine that works for your voice is instrumental to sustaining good singing (and preaching) habits.
