I've been observing and singing on worship teams for over 20 years and I've noticed that there are some consistent mistakes that can adversely impact a worship set.
Here are 7 common vocal problems that I've seen kill a worship set stone dead. Imagine you buy the latest album from your favourite Worship Leader? You're settled down in a quiet place to soak and meditate, you're praying and you press play to start the track. What you hear are terrible, incoherent pitchy noises playing back in your ears. What you expected to hear was a sweet, dulcet and melodious voice, singing worship that you can easily listen to and sing along with, but instead its mumbling, incoherent, discordant and distracting.
Now imagine that the worship leader is Matt Redman? Kari Jobe? Dante Bowe? Chandler Moore? CeCe Winans? Let's be honest. A mumbly, pitchy and incoherent voice is not what you really want to hear from your worship leaders, especially when you've spent money. So why do we allow it on Sunday Mornings?
Check out this article from Trustworthy Word which breaks down why we sing as an act of worship. Laden throughout the Bible are dozens and dozens of scriptures about singing in the Bible. Over 200, in fact. Here are 10 of my favourites:
1 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding. 1 Corinthians 14:15 2 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. Colossians 3:16 Do THIS if you want consistently strong vocal dynamics when leading worship. Photo by Biruk Masresha on Unsplash
